Last year, strolling through the Newcastle Farmers Market with my sister when I spotted the beautiful hand made candles I seen earlier in the week at a shop. I wasn’t surprised to see these candles had previously won at the Royal Easter Show.

Wasn’t long before Suzanne and I were in a conversation about how bee’s wax makes the best candles. Not only are the great for creating better air quality in the home but they also burn longer, support bee’s and the environment. So automatically I became a huge fan! Also was able to grab some bees wax that I used for DIY Cling Wrap.

With Suzanne last year (2013) at the Newcastle Farmer Market

Asked Suzanne to put together a few words about how Suz E Bee Candles came into existence. This is what she wrote to share with us:

Suz E Bee Candles was created in late 2009.  This came about following a life-changing back injury, mental breakdown and subsequent chronic anxiety and panic attacks (which I still constantly suffer from) brought on by the sudden change from corporate chick whose work was her life (and mark of success) to someone who had way too much idle time on her hands.

I had been forced to move away from all of my friends and networks in Sydney and had very few hobbies to speak of (that I was still able to do…. Horse riding is sadly still something I’m unable to tackle.  One day I’ll get back on a horse).   So, I had to try to think of something that I could do to give me back some feeling of self-worth, something that I could pick up and do whenever it pleased me (those of you who have or know someone who suffers from chronic pain and/or depression will understand the frustration of not sleeping and wanting to try and take your mind off things at 3am).

Where to start looking?  A memory popped into my head one morning of me rolling beeswax candles from a candle kit my Brother had given me in my late teenage years (now, when I say a memory, it was like I was back there watching myself, I could smell the beeswax and hear it as it rolled and feel it under my fingers).  Now, I’d been an advocate of pure beeswax candles and they had been my chosen choice of candles to burn in my home for around five years prior to my injury and they were something that on my pension was now deemed an unaffordable luxury item.  So, slowly I started doing some research and investigating into how to actually make them myself.  Unlike candle making using other types of wax (paraffin, soy, palm) there is almost no information out there on how to make pure beeswax candles and so the challenge to teach myself began.

I started off with rolled candles and gifted them to friends and family for Christmas that year.  Those friends and family then encouraged me to develop my beautiful little hobby into a business.

Making pure beeswax candles really is like rocket science!

I still love rolling my candles but have to say the poured candles are my favourite.  They are a challenge!  Each new candle added to my range has gone through thorough testing before I’m willing to launch it.  My tea light candles alone took around 38 different sized wicks before the right one was found.

In 2013 I took the brave step in entering five of my candles into the Sydney Royal Easter Show.  Much to my amazement I managed to take out 1st and 2nd places for poured candles and 1st and 2nd place for rolled candles.

I pride myself on my products.  I love the interaction I have with my beekeepers and customers.  The joy I get from working with pure beeswax is indescribable.

I do hope that my love and passion for what I do shows to those of you who come across my products or meet me on the market trail.

Looking back at my journey over the past seven years, although I wouldn’t wish what I’ve been through on anyone, I wouldn’t change it should I be given the chance.  Suz E Bee Candles is my new mark of success!
